When the civil war in Ukraine started, the question that arised is whether there are similarities between Ukrainian and Yugoslavian civil wars. So let’s compare these two countries, one that is falling apart – Ukraine and the other one that doesn’t exist anymore – Yugoslavia.
Multinational country
Yugoslavia was a multinational country with different national and ethnic groups coexisting together and two dominant nations Serbs and Croats. Ukraine is also quite a diverse country with Ukrainians, Russians (around 20% of Ukrainian population) and few minorities (Rusyns, Romanians, Hungarians) living together. Once the Yugoslavia collapsed, in a newly created ex-Yugoslav republic Croatia and Bosnia, Serbs lost its status of a constitutional nation and become a national minority heavily discriminated and harassed by new nationalistic governments. On the other side after the fall of Soviet Union, Ukrainian leadership, especially newly installed NATO puppet regime, didn’t allow to use Russian language as an official one and Russian minority was discriminated in order to build new anti-Russian Ukrainian identity.
Religious conflict
Even though it is not obvious at a first sight, it is important to realise that there is a strong religious aspect of Ukrainian civil war. This is something that is similar to civil war in Yugoslavia that also involved a religious conflict. Three sides that were fighting in ex-Yugoslav wars belonged to different religions. Serbs are Orthodox Christians, Croatians – Catholics and Bosnian Muslims and Albanians are Muslims. There is a similar pattern in Ukrainian civil war. Although many of them formally belong to the same nation – Ukrainian one, many Ukrainians belong to different denominations of Christianity. Novorossia forces belong to Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Moscow Patriarchate (UOC –MP), while most of the Ukrainian forces belong to the unrecognised schismatic “Ukrainian orthodox church” led by ex-KGB agent Filaret, Ukrainian Greek-catholic church and Catholic church. History between Vatican and Orthodox Christians in both Balkans and Ukraine is tragic. During XXVII century Orthodox population in the West of the Ukraine was forcefully converted into union with the Rome. The same tragedy happened in the Balkans during the last five centuries. For example, during Second World War Vatican manage to forcefully convert more than 400.000 Orthodox Serbs to Catholicism and more that 100.000 was “peacefully integrated” during the last civil war. In Croatia, Bosnia and Serbian Kosovo more than of 500 Orthodox churches were destroyed many of them dating from as early as XII century. The same planned destruction of Orthodox churches is unveiling in the Ukrainian conflict. Ukrainian forces consider canonical UOC–MP as a Russian nationalistic church and Putin religious force. That’s the reason Ukrainian paramilitaries are destroying Orthodox churches and killing orthodox priests because they want to forcefully install their denominations of Christianity in traditionally Orthodox Eastern Ukraine. Don’t forget the statement of Brzezinski that after eliminating communism the major threat to the West is Christian Orthodoxy. Samuel Huntington’s “The Clash of Civilisations?” comes to one’s mind with his theory that people’s cultural and religious identities will be the primary source of conflict in the post-Cold War world.
Western propaganda
During civil war in Yugoslavia, the West has armed Croats, Bosnian Muslims and Albanians together with a help of some Muslim countries (in particular Saudi Arabia and Iran), but it was also heavily engaged in anti-Serbian propaganda by demonising Serbs in the Western media. There are many racist quotes for Western politicians about Serbs. For example ambassador of UNESCO and famous actor Peter Ustinov called Serbs subhuman, the same name Ukrainian Prime minister Yatsenyuk used to describe “Russian terrorists” in Ukraine. Also Hollywood contribution to serbophobia campaign was not insignificant – portraying Serbs as bad guys in Hollywood movies. One would say this is why the West always considered Serbs as “little Russians from Balkan” having in mind their common Slavic roots, Orthodox religion and civilisation. The similar demonization and russophobia is unveiling now in Ukraine where Russia, Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) and Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) forces are characterised by the Western media as Russian terrorists, the Asiatic hordes of Russia, killers and aggressors. In both conflicts the side the West favours claims to be making a “civilisational choice” for Europe and the West against the “dark barbarian East” supposedly represented by the other side. Fortunately, this time many Western citizens don’t take Western mainstream media propaganda for granted as they did in 90’s and they are new alternative media who are breaking the monopoly of Western media in the world.
Double standards regarding the right for self-determination
While the West, especially USA and Germany, encouraged collapse of Yugoslavia and separation and creation of Croatian and Bosnian state along communist administrative borders, the right for self-determination was denied to Serbs in their majority populated areas. It is important to notice that borders of the Ex-Yugoslav republic were administrative one, they were not the historical one and they were drown by communists who consider that the biggest problem of Yugoslavia before the Second World War was Serbian domination. In addition, Croatian and Bosnian separation was also blatant violation of the Yugoslavian constitution, but the West completely ignored this fact than. However nowadays, we hear hypocritical Western politicians reminding us that the referendum in the Crimea and the Donbas was not according to the Ukrainian constitution. What about Western hypocrisy and illegal NATO aggression in 1999 against Serbia and occupation of Serbian Kosovo where they install NATO puppet state ruled by Albanian war criminals and drug dealers? Since Serbs in artificially created Croatia and Bosnia were formally denied the right to self-determination, they created Republic of Srpska and Republic of Serbian Krajina. The same self-determination process is happening now in Ukraine with the creation of LPR and DPR and their unification into Novorossiya. It is worth noticing that the West is not only denying people of Eastern Ukraine and Crimea the right for self-determination, it is also dismissing any prospect of genuine autonomy and federalisation within Ukraine.
Ethnic cleansing
The plan in both civil wars is the same, namely, ethnic cleansing of territories populated by an undesired population. Even though the Western propaganda accused Serbs to be “Butchers of the Balkans”, both Croatia and NATO occupied Kosovo were cleansed out of Serbs. Croats and Albanians succeeded in it, Bosnian Muslims – did not. In 1995, during Croatian punitive military operation Storm, they manage to cleanse Republic of Serbian Krajina. Today Serbs constitute less that 3% of Croatian population and this was official goal stated by Croatian president Tudjman. Serbian population was reduced by more than 70% in the aftermath of the war. Kosovo was also cleansed for Serbs with more that 250.000 Serbs fled and only 120.000 managed to stay. They are still heavily discriminated and persecuted. Ethnic cleansing of Russian and pro-Russian Ukrainian population is the exact plan of the Kiev regime. That’s the reason we are seeing numerous reports of indiscriminate shelling, killing civilians and bombing civilian infrastructure including hospitals, power plants, coals, water-processing plants etc. More than one million Ukrainian citizens (registered and unregistered refuges) fled to Russia from the Kiev’ regime and this represents the biggest exodus of Europeans since the Second World War. Kiev’s plan is only to keep few million loyalists and continue using vast resources of Donbas. Let’s not forget that the Ukrainian volunteers are promised free land if Ukraine wins the war in Donbas. It is Ukrainian version of Nazi “Lebensraum”.
Failed state
Both Yugoslavia and Ukraine were never fully functional states and cohesive societies. They can be considered to some extent as “artificial countries”. After collapse of Soviet Union and Yugoslavia both Ukraine and some of the ex-Yugoslav republics (Croatia, Bosnia) were created within the administrative borders drown by communities than never reflected historical borders between the nations. After the Second World War Yugoslavia only survived under the authoritarian communist rule. Ukraine as a state never existed in current borders and never had any tradition of statehood. It was unsuccessful geopolitical experiment that never really worked out. It included unsuccessful effort to create strong unifying anti-Russian Ukrainian identity and to unite together people of different languages, nations and religions. Furthermore, Ukrainian economy never recovered from the fall of Soviet Union. Ukrainian political “elite” had 24 years to create a functional state and society and they miserably failed in it. Ukrainian state apparatus tried to built unity through promotion of Ukrainian nationalism via educational system and media but it never really succeeded in it. The West/East divide in Ukrainian society is just too big. That’s the reason it was doomed to fail from the beginning, especially from the moment when pro-Western puppet regime took over the power by coup d’etat and adopted even more extreme West Ukrainian anti-Russian paradigm and views as official doctrine.
Myth about foreign military aggression
During Croatian and Bosnian civil wars both Croats and Muslims claimed that this is not a genuine civil war but Serbian aggression on their countries in order to create “Great Serbia”. The facts speak differently with 95% of soldiers on the ground being local Serbs fighting for their homeland and newly created republics – Republic of Srpska and Republic of Serbian Krajina. The similar thing is happening in Ukraine with LPR and DPR. However, according to Ukrainian and Western propaganda, this is no civil war; it is just “crazy Putin” trying to revive dream of Great Russian Empire or Soviet Union 2.0 by invading Ukraine. Western and Ukrainian propagandists want to depict the conflict as a war between Ukraine and Russia and not Ukrainian war against its own citizens.

During the recent years of the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, there has been one issue where the Western mainstream press simply cannot fully ignore or reject the Russian arguments. This issue concerns the life and actions of Stepan Bandera (1909-1959) and his followers from what is known as the “Banderite” faction of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN, a far-right organization that took terrorist actions against Polish and Soviet officials from the 1920s to the 1950s and which is now legally protected from any criticism in Ukraine).THE “WRONG” AND “RIGHT” VICTIMSBecause Bandera was born on January 1, 1909, celebrations ...
Every day signs are looming larger than life as we know it in the wealthiest nation on earth that it’s about to crash and burn, forever changing not for the better. The latest wake-up call arrived in a Guardian article earlier this week. The story features a secret prison not unlike the CIA torture detention centers all over the world whereby the Chicago police hold rounded up US citizens for hours or days at a time for interrogation. The same internationally illegal roundups of suspected “potential terrorists” (which by latest Gestapo America standards can easily be you or me) that the CIA ...
Greater Albania under Nazi GermanyDuring World War II, 35,000 to 40,000 Kosovo Albanians were recruited by Nazi Germany as part of the German occupation forces and security formations in Greater Albania, a state created by Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini that included Kosovo-Metohija, western Macedonia, and territory from Serbia and Montenegro. In Albania, there were 30,000 Albanians who were in the German occupation forces. In 1941, the German occupation forces created a Kosovo Albanian Gendarmerie with headquarters in Kosovska Mitrovica. In 1944, these forces were incorporated into the Skanderbeg Nazi SS Division. In 1942, Balli Kombetar organization battalions were established ...
Stalinist “Land of Eagles” As in neighboring Yugoslavia, the communist revolutionary guerrilla forces, established by the aid and crucially supported by the Yugoslav communists led by local Albanian communist leader Enver Hoxha, took over the power in Albania in 1944.[1] From 1945 to 1948 Albania was under the strong influence of Titoist Yugoslavia and both counties being under the hand of J. V. Stalin. Yugoslavia lavishly supplied Albania with deficient material, mainly nutritious ones, like wheat, etc. As testified by the Montenegrin zealot communist and revolutionist Milovan Đilas, one of the leading Yugoslav politicians at the time, and a member ...
Revelations of fascistic crimes carried out by the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) prior to, during and after NATO’s war against the former Yugoslavia should provide a salutary lesson whenever Washington again cites humanitarian concerns to justify its predatory war aims. A new report prepared by Swiss Council of Europe deputy Dick Marty slams Kosovo leader Hachim Thaci for organ trafficking and other abominable crimes, deftly shaded by the U.S. in pursuit of their own self-interests.A report by the Council of Europe describes Kosovo today as a country subject to “mafia-like structures of organised crime”. It accuses KLA commander and current ...
One of the most disturbing aspects of the past two years of Donald Trump foreign policy has been the assumption that decisions made by the United States are binding on the rest of the world. Apart from time of war, no other nation has ever sought to prevent other nations from trading with each other. And the United States has also uniquely sought to penalize other countries for alleged crimes that did not occur in the US and that did not involve American citizens, while also insisting that all nations must comply with whatever penalties are meted out by Washington. The ...
America’s hegemonic project in the post 9/11 era is the “Globalization of War” whereby the U.S.-NATO military machine –coupled with covert intelligence operations, economic sanctions and the thrust of “regime change”— is deployed in all major regions of the world. The threat of pre-emptive nuclear war is also used to black-mail countries into submission. This “Long War against Humanity” is carried out at the height of the most serious economic crisis in modern history. It is intimately related to a process of global financial restructuring, which has resulted in the collapse of national economies and the impoverishment of large sectors of ...
When I saw the media in Serbia reporting about Donald Trump’s alleged condemnation of the 1999 NATO attack on then-Yugoslavia, also known as the Kosovo War, I shrugged it off as disinformation. Most of them, I’m sad to say, are almost entirely dedicated to gaslighting the general populace, and as likely to spread confusion and cognitive dissonance as actual news.It turns out that Donald Trump did talk to Larry King about Kosovo – but everyone is leaving out that this took place in October 1999. That is sort of important, though: by that point, the Serbian province had been “liberated” ...
The Balkans has always been cursed by a recurring theme: that each entity within it can, at some point, become greater and more consuming in territory than the next neighbour. Each nation has, and in some instances continues, to nurse dreams of enlargement, pecking away at borders and assuming that few will notice.Strategies of expansion tend to have one problem: they are hard to evaluate in the way of conventional agreement, contract or conspiracy. For decades, historians of various shades would attribute to Imperial Germany a conscious, global goal of conquest, mistaking the plans of contingent invasion with actual policy. In ...

George Szamuely. Bombs for Peace: NATO’s Humanitarian War on Yugoslavia. Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2013 (Distributed in the U.S. and Canada by the University of Chicago Press). Paper. Pp. 611.In Bombs for Peace, George Szamuely, a senior research fellow at the Global Policy Institute at London Metropolitan University, has produced a revealing and sharply argued analysis of Western intervention in the Balkan wars of the 1990s. The primary focus of the book is on Western diplomatic and military interventions, which played a crucial role in the breakup of Yugoslavia and the plunge into conflict. Continued intervention fueled deeper conflict, as ...
The British Labour Party no longer represents the working class. Under UK prime minister Tony Blair, the Labour Party became a vassal of the One Percent. The result has been a rebellion in the ranks and the rise of Jeremy Corbyn, a principled Labourite intent on representing the people, a no-no in Western “democracies.”Corbyn is too real for the Labour Party Blairites, who hope to be rewarded with similar nest eggs as Blair for representing the capitalist One Percent. So what is the corrupted Labour Party doing to prevent Corbyn’s election? The answer is that it is denying the vote to ...
For overwhelming Western political analysts, journalists, scientists, etc., the disappearance of the USSR in 1990/91 was symbolized overdramatically by the physical destruction of the Berlin Wall followed by the removal/destruction of status/monuments devoted to the communist leaders and communist ideology. This geopolitical change called for a new world order in international relations (IR) and, in fact, heralded global peace, international democracy, and worldwide security and stability in foreign affairs after the Cold War 1.0 (1949−1989). The period of the Cold War was a historic period lasting from the time of the establishment of the NATO pact in 1949 to the ...
Caroline Elkins’ accounts of British soldiers ramming broken bottles into the vaginas of female Kenyan prisoners during the Kikuyus’ Mau Mau revolt is not, by any stretch, the worst example of Albion’s imperial violence she recounts. Because this 870 page book is awash with similar instances of systematic war crimes by the British administration in Kenya, in Nigeria, Jamaica, South Africa, Malaya, Palestine, Cyprus, Nyasaland, India and countless other outposts of empire, justifiable comparisons between the British and the Nazis arise time and again. And, although many Nazis were brought to book for their crimes, no British were, even though General ...
Donald Trump entered military terra incognita on Thursday by launching an illegal Tomahawk missile strike on an air base in eastern Syria. Beyond the clear violation of international law, the practical results are likely to be disastrous, drawing the U.S. deeper into the Syrian quagmire. But it would be a mistake to focus all the criticism on Trump. Not only are Democrats also at fault, but a good argument could be made that they bear even greater responsibility. For years, near-total unanimity has reigned on Capitol Hill concerning America’s latest villains du jour, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Syria’s Bashar al-Assad. Congressmen, senators, ...
Unlike a regular corporation, the corporations that manufacture and sell weapons to their government are virtually 100% dependent upon their government and its military allies, for their own success; their markets are only those governments, not individuals (such as is the case for normal corporations). Consequently, either their government will control them, and those firms won’t have any effective control over their own markets, or else those firms will, themselves, control their government, and thereby effectively control their markets, via the government’s foreign policies — not only via expanding its military alliances (those firms’ foreign markets), but via its designating ...
Sunday January 24th 2016 marks the anniversary of the death of one of the most lionized leaders in the Western world: Sir Winston Churchill. The current British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has called Churchill “the greatest ever Prime Minister”, and Britons have recently voted him as the greatest Briton to have ever lived. The story that British schoolbooks tell children about Churchill is of a British Bulldog, with unprecedented moral bravery and patriotism. He, who defeated the Nazis during World War II and spread civilisation to indigenous people from all corners of the globe. Historically, nothing could be further from the truth. To ...
It was in 1916, in the midst of World War I, that Britain and France (pitted against the Germans, Austrians and Ottoman Turks) made their infamous Sykes-Picot agreement. In grand imperial style, they used this agreement to divide up the Middle East between them. It was a daring move, considering that the war was at a stalemate and the two allies did not know if they were going to win the struggle. Nonetheless, they went ahead with the agreement and in doing so made a number of decisions that continue to shape the region to this day.Besides bringing traditional European imperialism ...
Armenians and others around the world this month are marking the centennial of the genocide that left hundreds of thousands of Armenians dead early in the last century. The date April 24 is typically picked as the centennial day since it was on that day in 1915 that Turkish authorities rounded up Armenian intellectuals and leaders in Constantinople and murdered them.It was the first step in a much broader slaughter. The Armenian centennial is getting the attention it deserves from sources as diverse as Pope Francis and Kim Kardashian. The Pope courageously used the word “genocide” in a mass this ...
