De-Recognition of Kosovo: US Tries to Stem the Tide
Ironically, while Morocco is trying to convince nations to de-recognize the Sahrawi Republic, it has withheld recognition of Kosovo because it does not want to give credence to the recognition of breakaway states [...]
The international community is accustomed to the so-called “checkbook diplomacy” that has been used by China and Taiwan to pilfer each other’s diplomatic allies by exchanging diplomatic recognition for generous financial assistance packages. However, this same battle for diplomatic recognition and de-recognition is being played out between Serbia and its breakaway province of Kosovo. The United States and much of NATO has not only granted Kosovo diplomatic recognition over the objection of Serbia but has also pressured other countries to recognize Kosovo’s independence. This process has hit a major stumbling block amid charges from various parties that fake diplomatic letters and proclamations are being issued by nations that claim to de-recognize Kosovo. The worlds of international diplomacy and “fake news” have now been joined together.
The Donald Trump administration, which is, by the day, taking on a more neo-conservative hue, with the likes of John Bolton running the National Security Council and Richard Grenell eroding his diplomatic welcome in Berlin as US ambassador, is monetizing diplomatic recognition in a manner that would embarrass the checkbook diplomacy doyens of Beijing and Taipei.
As the Serbian Foreign Minister, Ivica Dacic, makes his diplomatic rounds, convincing foreign ministries around the world to de-recognize Kosovo, the Kosovo Foreign Minister, Behgjet Pacolli, has made nervous calls to world capitals asking them for either clarification or a reversal of their withdrawal of recognition. If that does not work, the authorities in the Kosovo capital of Pristina rely on their NATO “big brothers” – the United States and United Kingdom – to intercede on their behalf. Such diplomatic ping-pong has also affected international recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic – Western Sahara – with its occupying power. Morocco, willing to force nations to de-recognize the independence of the territory it considers to be a province of Morocco. Hypocritically, while Washington and London insist that nations previously committing to recognize Kosovo maintain that policy, they are more than willing to allow Morocco to pressure nations to sever diplomatic ties with Western Sahara’s government, which is a full member of the African Union.
Ironically, while Morocco is trying to convince nations to de-recognize the Sahrawi Republic, it has withheld recognition of Kosovo because it does not want to give credence to the recognition of breakaway states. The difference is that Serbia considers Kosovo to be a rebellious province that unilaterally declared independence in violation of international law, while Western Sahara has never been a legal part of Morocco. Prior to 1975, Western Sahara was a colony of Spain.
Kosovo is not a member of the United Nations or many specialized agencies. Opposition from nations as large as Russia and China and as influential in the European Union as Spain and Greece have kept it out of the UN and organizations like the World Health Organization and the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Kosovo has managed to win membership in FIFA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), thanks to heavy lobbying by Washington, London, and Berlin.
In late 2017, Serbia had some initial success in convincing nations to de-recognize Kosovo. Among the first to do so were Suriname and Guinea-Bissau. Early in 2018, Burundi followed suit and it was joined by Liberia. This news resulted in dueling diplomatic communiqués from Belgrade, Pristina, and several world capitals. In June 2018, Liberian Foreign Minister Gbehzohngar Milton Findley announced that his country was pulling its recognition of Kosovo and declared that it recognized Kosovo as the “Serbian province of Kosovo and Metohija.”
From Pristina, Pacolli responded by stating that he spoke to people in the Liberian government that denied it was de-recognizing Kosovo. Borrowing a page from Trump, Pacolli called the announcement in Belgrade “fake news.” But Foreign Minister Findley was not a “fake” foreign minister and he appeared to be speaking on behalf of his government in Monrovia. What happened next is like a scene from a Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera. Pacolli flew to Monrovia from Kosovo and met with President George Weah. A former football player, Weah, according to Kosovo sources, promised a friendly football match between Liberia and Kosovo and promised to open a Liberian embassy in Pristina.
Apparently, Washington and London, which continue to support the problematic government of Kosovo, a nation that harbors several criminal syndicates, applied pressure on Monrovia to reverse its decision on Kosovo recognition. Confusion still reigns supreme about whether Liberia recognizes Kosovo or not. One thing is for certain, no Liberian embassy has been established in Pristina. Regardless of what occurred at the meeting between Pacolli and Weah, by early November 2018, Liberia, as well as Papua New Guinea, Dominica, São Tomé and Príncipe, Grenada, Lesotho, Comoros, and Guinea-Bissau were listed as officially withdrawing recognition of Kosovo. Kosovo also claimed that the micro-state, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM), which is headquartered in Rome and carries diplomatic recognition, extended recognition to Kosovo. However, the SMOM denied this.
When Suriname de-recognized Kosovo in 2017, the authorities in Pristina declared, quite erroneously, that “in the international law there is no concept of withdrawing a recognition.” It is not certain what international law to which Kosovo was referring but withdrawing or denying recognition of a nation’s independence is done all the time. Taiwan has seen it occur, as have the People’s Republic of China, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Israel, Palestine, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia.
The collapse of certain nation-states also resulted in withdrawal of recognition by other nations. This was the case with the Republic of (South) Vietnam, Republic of South Vietnam (Viet Cong), the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), Biafra, Sultanate of Zanzibar, People’s Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba, Sikkim, Tibet, Khanate of Kalat, Kingdom of Sarawak, People’s Republic of Kampuchea, Democratic Republic of Yemen, People’s Republic of Tannu Tuva, Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda, Ciskei, Gazankulu, Rhodesia, the Finnish Democratic Republic, Neutral Moresnet, Free City of Danzig, Free City of Trieste, Tangier International Zone, and Manchukuo.
In the limbo category are recognitions of Kosovo’s independence by the “Republic of China” on Taiwan and two associated states of New Zealand, the Cook Islands and Niue. Kosovo did not reciprocate Taiwan’s recognition because it wants to be eventually recognized by China. Niue and the Cook Islands apparently did not realize they had recognized Kosovo, since the announcement came only from the Pristina authorities.
In addition to the United States and the United Kingdom, Turkey is working to extend recognition to Kosovo by nations that have never recognized the breakaway province or have de-recognized it.
The diplomatic battle between Serbia and Kosovo continues to be waged around the world. In May 2018, Kosovo was alarmed by an announcement in Belgrade by the speaker of the parliament of Ghana, Aaron Mike Oquaye, that he would recommend to Ghana’s president and foreign minister that Ghana de-recognize Kosovo. Oquaye spoke fondly of historical ties between Ghana and the former Yugoslavia fostered by the close cooperation between Yugoslav President Josip Tito and Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, in the Non-Aligned Movement. Serbia alleges that Kosovo falsely claims that less than a dozen nations recognize Pristina. Belgrade claims that Kosovo merely makes up diplomatic ties with other nations.
Welcome to the post-factual world where not only “fake news” but “fake diplomatic relations” are the new protocol.
Countries recognizing Kosovo independence in 2018

Hypocrisy may be the only consistent guiding principle of US foreign policy. Here's a prime example of the "do as we say, not as we do" that is the core of how Washington does business overseas: In the same week that the the US Justice Department demanded that the Russian-backed RT America network register as a foreign propaganda entity or face arrest, the US State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DNL) has announced that it is launching a program to massively interfere in NATO-partner Hungary's internal media. So the US Justice Department is cracking down on RT America for what ...

The following text is a point by point thematic summary of Prof. Michel Chossudovsky‘s presentation at the Science for Peace Conference, Academy of Sciences, Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur, 15-16 August 2016.IntroductionHistorically, science has supported the development of the weapons industry and the war economy. “Science for Peace” indelibly requires reversing the logic whereby commissioned scientific endeavors are directed towards supporting what President Eisenhower called “The Military Industrial Complex”.What is consequently required is a massive redirection of science and technology towards the pursuit of broad societal objectives. In turn, this requires a major shift in what is euphemistically called “US Foreign Policy”, namely ...
The full extent of the damage to international peace and security caused by the US-led Syrian strikes will take some time to become clear. But its impact on the very concept of legality in international affairs is already evident.Simply put, the most powerful county in the world and its chief satellites, the UK and France, have thrown the rule of law into the trash can. The only "law" now is the law of the jungle. There is no going back.Ironically, the attack itself was claimed by its perpetrators as enforcement of legality, not of its obliteration. For example, NATO Secretary-General ...
Whether the information originated from hacked e-mails and computer files or Freedom of Information Act requests, the revelations about the political and business activities of Hillary and Bill Clinton and their cronies hearken back to another era, the Great Depression of the 1930s and the crime spree of another unscrupulous couple: bank robbery desperados Bonnie and Clyde.Aside from Hillary Clinton running her own lucrative «off-the-books» foreign policy via her private email servers and e-mail chain of associates and flunkies, it was her and her husband’s joint Clinton Foundation and Teneo Capital operations that scream out the word «corruption.» The servers ...
Veterans Day has passed. The annual ritual never changes. Politicians who didn’t serve in the armed services start unnecessary wars, killing military personnel whose sacrifices are then lauded. Officials say these heroes died defending our freedom. That is almost always a lie.Sometimes Washington must go to war. Not often, however. Despite the endless claims that we live in a dangerous world, America is amazingly safe. No other power could defeat, let alone conquer, the United States. Only Russia has a comparable nuclear arsenal, but it would be destroyed if Moscow targeted America. China and Russia trail U.S. conventional military strength ...
As President Trump affirms publicly his commitment to friendly relations with Russia at an economic summit in Hanoi, (the first President since Franklin Roosevelt to do so), the press backs the special prosecutor seeking to indict him, while NATO continues to ramp up its forces on Russia’s borders with Europe by bringing in tanks and other ‘defensive’ weapons. Although the United States was founded on Christian principles, and has one of the highest percentages of people practicing a religion of any Western country, most Americans seem not to realize that their country is building a case for nuclear war with the ...
To gauge the transformation in the response by the U.S. military, the mainstream media and the public to a U.S. war crime, one need only compare the reactions to two of the most heinous American crimes: the 1968 My Lai massacre in Vietnam and the gunning down of innocent Iraqis on a Baghdad street in 2007.The latter was captured on a cockpit video from attacking Apache helicopters and revealed in a video released by WikiLeaks ten years ago today. Wikileaks obtained the video from a conscientious U.S. Army intelligence analyst, Chelsea Manning. The My Lai incident was revealed to the public ...
President Bill Clinton’s favorite freedom fighter just got indicted for mass murder, torture, kidnapping, and other crimes against humanity. In 1999, the Clinton administration launched a 78-day bombing campaign that killed up to 1500 civilians in Serbia and Kosovo in what the American media proudly portrayed as a crusade against ethnic bias. That war, like most of the pretenses of U.S. foreign policy, was always a sham.Kosovo President Hashim Thaci was charged with ten counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity by an international tribunal in The Hague in the Netherlands. It charged Thaci and nine other men with ...
Greater Albania under Nazi GermanyDuring World War II, 35,000 to 40,000 Kosovo Albanians were recruited by Nazi Germany as part of the German occupation forces and security formations in Greater Albania, a state created by Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini that included Kosovo-Metohija, western Macedonia, and territory from Serbia and Montenegro. In Albania, there were 30,000 Albanians who were in the German occupation forces. In 1941, the German occupation forces created a Kosovo Albanian Gendarmerie with headquarters in Kosovska Mitrovica. In 1944, these forces were incorporated into the Skanderbeg Nazi SS Division. In 1942, Balli Kombetar organization battalions were established ...
With the March 24 ICTY decision condemning Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic for war crimes, exactly 17 years after NATO began its bombing spree on Serbia, international criminal justice revealed itself once again as an instrument of US and NATO foreign policy.[They chose that the 24th of March to render judgment regarding Karadzic iquite deliberately with a view to erasing the history of NATO crimes.]If any doubts persist, it is worth remembering how the Former US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues, David Scheffer, perceived that tribunal. Writing about it in his memoirs, Scheffer wrote unabashedly:the tribunal was an important judicial tool, and I had enough ...
Over the past several years, analysts and commentators have noticed a rising tide of domestic support for the Croatian homegrown Nazi movement of the Second World War, the Ustashe, which actively exterminated Serbs, Jews, and Roma in the territory it controlled from 1941-45. Far from condemning this alarming development, the Croatian government, the European Union, and non-state actors within it have tacitly and actively supported the rising tide of sympathy towards the Ustashe. This disconnect between the ostensible “European values” of human rights and tolerance that the European Union claims to represent, and its tacit support of trends towards extremist politics ...
The public has been so brainwashed by Big Brother’s lies so that many people won’t believe this article unless they click onto the link wherever they happen to think that what it is alleging is false. Then, they will see the evidence, for themselves, and will recognize that they’ve been fooled about that matter, and those readers will learn something important that they didn’t know before — including that Big Brother is real, and what it actually is, and how it came to be the way it is. This is about reality, the reality behind the screen of lies.Today's Axis ...
In late November 2013, the ‘Euromaidan’ in Kiev began as a popular protest against a generalized state of corruption and cronyism in Ukraine. The spark that ostensibly ignited the protests was the inability of then President Yanukovych to sign an EU Association Agreement that would cut Ukraine’s economic and military ties to Russia in favor of a closer relationship with the EU and NATO.The EU had made the release of former Ukrainian prime minister and “gas princess” Tymoshenko a precondition for signing the agreement. But the fact that Tymoshenko was/is a convicted embezzler of state funds, combined with the rather ...
A National traumaA national trauma which the Serbs after the fall of the Serbian national state and the Ottoman occupation experienced after June 20th, 1459[i] can be compared with that felt by Judea’s Jews after the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD.[ii] Since Serbia soon found herself well within the Ottoman Sultanate and the European Christian states were on defense from the victorious Muslim Ottoman Turks, no light at the end of the historical tunnel was seen and the whole nation sank into deep despair for the next four centuries. In a sense, the ...
Americans are outraged by allegations that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an intelligence service to hack email accounts of the Democratic National Committee. How inexpressibly heinous that one country, Russia, would try to influence elections in another sovereign country, in this case the United States! How unprecedented! How diabolical! How uniquely Russian! In response, the Obama administration has expelled Russian diplomats, hinted at economic sanctions, and promised further retaliation using America’s “world-class arsenal of cyber weapons.” (NYT Dec. 16, 2016) Obama’s Republican opponents, for their part, have demanded “rocks” instead of Obama’s “pebbles.”But does the USA meddle in the presidential elections ...
The rapacious conduct of the big hyenas is being replicated by their camp followers. Not to be outdone, Kosovo Albanians are laying claim to Serbian cultural monuments in Kosovo.A controversy has recently erupted in Mexico, of the type that may quite often be seen in other similarly defrauded countries. Its focus is the magnificent quetzal-plumed headdress of the last Aztec emperor Moctezuma which, contrary to the misleading impression encouraged by the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, is not displayed there at all. It is actually located, of all places, in the Ethnological Museum in Vienna, Austria. The impression is misleading ...
The so called "Croatian scenario", is something that has been periodically brought up after the start of the armed conflict in Donbass. (Among other instances, yours truly noted this in articles from this past December 17 and August 24, 2015.) Promoted at Johnson's Russia List, the December 28 Euromaidan Press article "What Ukraine Can Take from the 'Croatian Scenario' of Conflict Resolution", omits some key factors for being apprehensive about the probability for success of an Operation Storm like strike against the Donbass rebels. In 1995, the Serb Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic, had essentially dropped the Krajina Serbs, with the hope that he could improve his relationship with the West. At ...
